Asperger’s Syndrome

Asperger's Syndrome is a Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD). It is characterized by severe and sustained impairment in social interaction, development of restricted and repetitive patterns of behaviour, interests, and activities. These characteristics result in clinically significant impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.

Characteristics

  • Impairment in social interaction and play skills;
  • Play is usually restricted and repetitive;
  • Different from autism in that language and cognitive development is not significantly delayed;
  • Mainly it is the social domain that is affected;
  • A large number of children are diagnosed between the ages of 5 and 9;
  • Motor delays, clumsiness;
  • Trouble with empathy.
